When his little sister was born with, says Victoria's father, Jim, it was the cake-tester, and they finally got it right with the beautiful Gracie. Victoria grew up in the shadow of her sister, and though she dearly loves Gracie, she is anxious to go home. The pain does not stop there, however. His father calls his first job at a prestigious private school in Manhattan and the pathos of Victoria begins a struggle with her weight and her belief that she is worthy to be loved (although men continue to be). The premise of the story is good, but it rings true not: parents are in two dimensions, cruel monster, and Victoria seems to have everything: great job, great apartment, perfect best friend. It's hard to believe that his parents still exercise power itself. Steel barely grazes the surface of an important topic, but it's not the reality, which is placed on top of bestseller lists. (Mar.)
